South African Kitchens: Dinner + Documentaries

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

18:00-20:00 South African Kitchens - Memory, Land and Loss.
20:00-22:00 Documentaries Screening + Q&A session.

Join us for an evening of storytelling through food, where starters, mains, and dessert draw from the lived experiences and culinary traditions of women from the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) and the Sendinggestig in South Africa.

Rooted in research that explores the intersections of race, gender, religion, and heritage, each course will evoke histories of belonging, displacement, and resistance.

Following the meal, we will screen the documentaries Uitgesmyt and In Gods Naam directed by Professor Siona O’Connell, which bring to life the themes of land dispossession, contested faith communities, and the enduring legacies of apartheid. This event offers a space to reflect on how ordinary practices like cooking and eating carry the weight of extraordinary histories — and how we might imagine a more just and inclusive table.
