The Power of the Shared Meal: Presentation and Panel Discussion with April Gertler and Yasaman Owrang

Time : 19:00-20:00

Link to Zoom meeting:
https://zoom.us/j/97880432050…
Tankstation will be hosting a presentation of April Gertler followed by a panel discussion between Yasaman Owrang, the director of Tankstation, and April Gertler moderated by Sam Samiee.
April Gertler’s multidisciplinary art practice takes social interaction as a constant vessel in her work with its multifaceted relations to the audience, everyday life, history, and community-making. In the wake of deep questions imposed on us all due to lockdowns and the interruption of the ongoing community-oriented activities, we decided to ask April to survey her projects for us and to engage in a conversation with Yasaman Owrang, who within the context of Tankstation has made artistic and cultural events constellations possible around the diner and the kitchen at Tankstation. The two have
diverse experiences and stories that will bring us to the long parallel histories of apple tart, gatherings, running a kitchen for the community, and reflections of those activities in the time of cyber-community making.
April Gertler is an American multidisciplinary artist who has been living and working in Berlin, Germany, since 2005. April’s work is social practice-based and is realized through lecture-performance, self-published artist books, social-sculpture, and artist walks. She moves fluidly between artistic practice, curatorial production, and pedagogy. While she is currently developing a new project space called WIRWIR (wirwir.org) in Berlin with her partner Adrian Schiesser, she also continues to work on a variety of other projects, which include; IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS (a series of interactive artist walks), started in 2013, SONNTAG (a project space existing in other people’s living rooms on a Sunday afternoon) in collaboration with Adrian Schiesser, started in 2012; and TAKE THE CAKE (a lecture-performance baking series), started in 2015. An overarching theme within her practice is creating spaces for dialoguing and exchange through diverse methods.
Although the Pandemic has wedged a space bar into
her practice, she is finding new ways to approach the concept of exchange
through online platforms and simply through windows in her flat. April also is the Founding Director of PICTURE BERLIN, an artist residency and peer – to – peer exchange program which she started in 2009 and has been an Adjunct Professor of Photography at Bard College Berlin since 2016.

We understand that these times have been hard for everyone. If you’d like to support us, you can still make a donation directly to our bank account (details below).

On the Necessity of Making Gardens
A presentation of the ongoing curatorial research by Laurie Cluitmans.
Tankstation is excited to host a conversation between Laurie Cluitmans and Sam Samiee. Laurie Cluitmans is currently the curator of contemporary art at the Centraal Museum Utrecht, working on the large scale exhibition On the Necessity of Gardening. Cluitmans has worked as an independent curator, critic, and writer with many publications in national and international journals. On her website, “Radicals and Radicants,” as well as in other essays of Cluitmans, one encounters metaphoric usages of the act of gardening as well as thinking about the questions of relation and positionalities through the metaphoric consideration of roots. She provides a fresh method of thinking about bifurcated notions in art history and curatorial practice which can be transcended and studied afresh. Within the conversation series at Tankstation with curators, creators, and artists, we will hear a presentation of Cluitmans’ timely project and join her in thinking about gardening, both in its literal sense as well as in relation to life under lockdown, the shadow of climate change, and political questions of belonging, mobility, migration, and urban wandering.
Tankstation has emerged and thrived as a web of relations between the local and global, often through an intertangling of roots drawing from sensibilities and alternative modes of coexistence in the Persianate world, thought through and applied in the context of contemporary art. The poesis in the approach of Cluitmans with her references to both the world of contemporary art and the world history of gardens will be put in conversation with how at Tankstation we have attempted to provide links between contemporary art and Persianate cultural lineages. This conversation is the first part of a series considering a Persianate mode of relationality in the context of contemporary art by inviting curators, artists, and creators whose works directly or indirectly relate to this cultural and artistic practice, especially addressing mobility, economy, and accessibility. The conversation will be live on Tankstation Facebook and Instagram.

We are delighted to receive Das Sound Kollektiv for the second time on our stage. They are on tour to present their freshly released album ‘Canine Canvas’.
These Dutch boys make contemporary music best described as live beats with influencedz improvisation. The band is formed in 2017 by the initiative of saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk. They associated themselves with German dogs so in contrast to all the ‘hip’ English names Das Sound Kollektiv was born. Their music is heavily influenced by people like Stevie Wonder and J Dilla but also by Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis.
The new album ‘Canine Canvas’ contains features with singer Ruben Hein and rapper Reazun.
Besides Kasper Rietkerk on saxophone, the band features Chiel van Rijn on bass, Bas Gankema on keys and Hugo Hinkel on drums. http://dassoundkollektiv.com/

ART in Tankstation

OPENNING 03/09/20

“In vertrouwde kringen”
Iris Veltman
Iris Veltman has just graduated from Crossmedia Design from AKI – ArtEZ, University of Art and Design, although her final exhibition was more aimed at Fine Art.
In her spatial work Iris communicates with people, about the people. She questions our ideas of beauty, as accidentally absurd they sometimes get, through well-considered playfulness.
Iris thinks in shapes and colors. The work is created by constantly puzzling and merging different objects and materials, without having
pre-conceived plans and sketches. Her requirements for shapes is to have an organic appearance based purely on her own abstract fantasy.
The objects form themselves! They are made of building foam, candle wax, rubber and plaster. Materials that naturally do not want to be controlled. Materials that see the opportunity to form themselves with stubbornness and a haptic appearance.
During creating process, she interfere as little as possible, letting the material explore oneself first. “At that point I have nothing to say. Without a voice, in the same way that we humans are ”created” in the belly and during birt
h.Only when I put the pieces together, I have the right to speak.”
———–
Art @ Table
Nicolai Boon
Since one year and a half Nicolai (1994) is dedicated to painting. Purely intuitive, dreaming of ultimate freedom of mind (symbolized by birds), and worlds full of fantasy, he is actually looking for a better world. In an ambiance without any fears, he strives to give live to paintings with a kind of originality, back to being a child.
Nicolai is using mainly primary colors and succeeds in keeping the artworks very open and uninhibited poetical.

“Watch it evolve”
We started a little garden! Not as one would wish but with what we’ve got! Some quarantine time, a bit of sunlight, soil, seeds, a bit of knowledge, a lot of helping hands with hope, enthusiasm and patience! Watch how it evolves, maybe it grows or does not! Doesn’t matter! Let’s just try! Maybe you also give it a go, put your fingers in the soil, make your own in pots, at home! And share your seedlings, if you are that far!

What was first : the word or the image.
Poet and artist Stefanie van Tuinen is from Enschede. She uses both media to express her experiences.
In her works of art she is often looking for the contrast between the inner and outer world of herself and her surroundings.
Mostly she will leave her public behind with a stilled smile, distressing feelings or even both.
Working in an involvement from a distance, one of the titel’s of her works says :
´´ I rather like to live in a sort of negative, to let myself shine ´

Short Movies

Dinner from 18:00 / Start: 19:30

Right before the lock down we had a great selection of short movies from talented Iranian directors on the screen. If you didn’t get the chance to watch them then, join us in the dining room to watch them together now!

—-

Iranian cinema is amongst the most important cinematic industries in the developing world. The short movies are the first steps of the young artists who create the future of that cinematic world. Tankstation has invited Sahand Kabiri, a filmmaker and writer from Tehran to curate a looping screening of a few, relatively new, short films that he has chosen as the highlights of the last few years of his survey in Iran.

Sahand Kabiri

Sahand (Tehran, 1991) is a filmmaker and screenwriter. He has obtained his BFA from University of Arts of Tehran in screenwriting, 2016. He has made three short movies and is now producing his fourth short movie ‘The Shell’ (A thriller about a teenager who is considering becoming a dealer, production 2020). He has been sitting on the jury of the Iranian Short Film Association (ISFA) for four years and is a member of academy of International Student Short film Festive, Nahal. He works and lives in Tehran.

Rogier Bak is an actor and comedian. He is Dutch, but has worked incredibly hard to make sure you could never tell. Having spent his formative years in the US, he feels like a foreigner in his own country. He regularly performs and hosts shows across the Netherlands, and appeared in the finals of the 2020 Comedy Talent Award. Follow him on Instagram and Twitter @rogierbak. Hermes Ahmadi has always been fascinated by human behaviour, so he decided to study sociology. When he found out humanity is even weirder than science can explain, the logical step for him was to become a comedian. But let’s be honest, he himself isn’t normal either, with his weird diet and hitch-hiking habits!

Fedor Ikelaar – He always felt a bit out of place in his native country Netherlands. So, a few years ago he left home to live in Nepal, where he feels even more out of place. Nowadays, he is one of the biggest English language comedians in Nepal, as he is quite tall. A full-time touring comedian, Fedor regales audiences all over the world with stories of being surrounded by spiritual Nepalese, opium dealers and forgotten hippies. He mostly fits himself in one of the aforementioned categories except at international airports ~ where he goes to hold on to his Dutch passport.
Fedor founded Top of the World Comedy, and recently organized Nepal’s first international comedy festival. As a co-founder of the Nepal-based comedy collective, Comedy Tuk Tuk, he tries to help up-and-coming local talent by staring down at them.

HUSH – VOL 1: Dan Tuffy /nl/aus

Australian/Dutch musician Dan Tuffy. Here it is, now!
Dan’s songs are centered around his great gift for storytelling. Musically, his songwriting sits comfortably and unashamedly alongside classics delivered by Nick Cave, Tom Waits or Bob Dylan on “Blood On The Tracks”. But there is no copycat stuff going on here. Tuffy has either ignored his influences or absorbed them at a cellular level. It’s unclear which, but his laments of lost love, dying cowboys, longing, self-loathing and betrayal are so unaffected and direct that they cannot help being anything but unique in their expression.

We are very much looking forward to this evening and there are plans for more hush sessions in future. Stay tuned!
